We had a great MathCounts problem this week that caused much discussion and consternation.  The problem was:

“At how many minutes after noon do the hour hand and minute hand of an analog clock first meet again?  Express your answer to the nearest whole number.”

This led to a discussion in one of my math classes as to what the exact time the two hands meet.  This is a much more challenging problem.  Have fun!

Roaring Springs Success!

The trip to roaring springs was fantastic.  Everyone caught fish.  The extra days of casting practice with Mary Ann Dozer and the fantastic Echo rods, reels, and lines donated by Echo and Wes Campbell at BackCountry Fly Shop made all the difference in the world.  Thank you Wes, Mary Ann, and Echo.  Thank you also Rick Hagan at the Roaring Springs Trout  Ranch for making the wonderful ranch available at a reasonable costs.

T. Tran put together this cool video of the day to thank Echo and BackCountry Fly Shop..

Dead Man’s Hand

Hey math students.  Periodically I will give you a cool math problem to solve.  Turn in your worked out solution for a point of extra credit.  (Must be turned in the week it was posted.) This first question caught my attention because of the cool skull/spinal cord graphics and because it is poker related.

Q:  What is the probability of getting dealt a “dead man’s hand” in a five card poker game?

The “DEAD MANS HAND” is the nickname given to two pairs,
the black aces and the black eights.
In 1876 the gunfighter WILD BILL HICKOK was murdered
in a saloon in Deadwood, Black Hills, Dakota while playing poker.
Legend has it that these were the cards he was holding when he was shot.
Nobody is sure what the fifth card was, or even if it had been dealt.

Welcome Back Middle School!

It’s great to be back at Ashbrook getting ready for the new school year.  So many cool new things are in store for this year, but first,  I have to announce the arrival of our gorgeous new mini-calaca Ellen Eliza, born on August 18th.

Little Ellie at one week old…
Henry is a crazy handful but as adorable as ever. Here enjoying yummy Burgerville fries.

Keep checking this site.  I plan on adding content as the year progresses and using this for communicating with my students through the school year.
